Postoperative infection after closed and open ankle fractures

چکیده
Ankle fracture is one of the most common traumas, the surgical treatment of which is usually performed by residents in traumatological training. The area is prone to postoperative infections due to swelling and circulatory problems. Wound dehiscience and superficial skin infection are the most common complications of operative ankle fracture treatment (4.6%), while the incidence for deeper infection around the ankle is 1.8% (1). In high-energy fractures infection complications are much more common – in the most difficult Gustilo type IIIB/C open ankle fractures infections are seen in up to 50% of the cases (2). The most important single factor predisposing to infection around the ankle is diabetes (3). The most common cause of postoperative osteomyelitis is an infection sustained by the presence of foreign material, and 80% of all cases are caused by Staphylococcus aureus (4). Soft tissue problems are directly proportional to the energy of trauma, and as soft tissue problems predispose to infections, the traumatologists should be familiar with the common classifications of closed and open fractures and soft tissue damage (5).

Reliability of Postoperative Radiographies in Ankle Fractures
Background: The accuracy of reduction of ankle fractures using postoperative plain radiographies (x-ray) remainswidely controversial. Some authors have demonstrated that postoperative computed tomography (CT) scan can beuseful for these patients. In current study, the efficacy of x-rays after fixation of ankle fractures was investigated basedon the CT scan findings.Metho...
متن کاملSyndesmotic Malreduction after Ankle ORIF; Is Radiography Sufficient?
Background: Ankle fractures, especially those resulting from external rotation mechanisms are associated with injury to the distal tibiofibular syndesmosis. Some authors have recommended performing CT scanning after open ankle surgery to evaluate the reduction of syndesmosis. In this current study, we aimed to investigate the sensitivity of plain radiography in diagnosing syndesmosis malreduc...
متن کاملEarly versus late surgery for closed ankle fractures.
PURPOSE To compare the outcome after early versus late surgery for closed ankle fractures in terms of the length of hospital stay and infection rate. METHODS Records of 95 men and 119 women aged 14 to 92 (mean, 46) years who underwent open reduction and internal fixation for ankle fractures during three 6-month periods in 2004, 2007, and 2010 were reviewed. 82 and 132 patients underwent surge...
متن کاملThe use of combined 3.5 LCP unicortical plate and nail fixation in proximal tibia fractures and prevention of valgus and anterior angulation
Introduction: Intramedullary nailing (IMN) of high tibia fracture has some mechanical and biological advantages over the other form of fixation. However, valgus, apex anterior malalignment and anterior displacement of proximal fragment commonly occur after isolated IMN fixation of proximal high tibia fracture. The purpose of this study is to determine the effectiveness of using 3.5-mm locking c...

PURPOSE To report injury patterns and management of musculoskeletal injuries after an earthquake. METHODS 94 male and 161 female patients aged 17 to 90 (mean, 53) years underwent surgery for musculoskeletal injuries. Their injury patterns, anaesthesia administered, surgeries undertaken, and development of postoperative complications were reviewed. RESULTS Of the 255 patients, 155 sustained ...
